Reseller: allows clients to become web hosts in their own right. A reseller can operate, for individual domains, using a combination of the kinds of hosting listed on this page. This could depend on who they are affiliated with as a provider. Resellers' accounts could vary tremendously in size and facilities and they may utilize virtual dedicated servers, dedicated servers or colocated servers.

Virtual Dedicated Server: compartmentalising a server into virtual servers, where each user feels that they are utilising their own dedicated server. Managed service: the hosting client leases their own web server but is not allowed absolute control over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); but, they are allowed to manage their data via FTP or other remote management tools. The customer is disallowed absolute control so that the provider can guarantee quality of service by not enabling the client to modify the server box or possibly create configuration problems. The hosting customer largely does not own the server equipment, rather the server equipment is rented to the business internet name user.

Colocation service: similar to the dedicated service only the hosting client owns the colocated equipment; the hosting organization provides the actual space that the server box uses and looks after the box. This is the most powerful and expensive kind of hosting service. Ordinarily, the colocation organisation may provide miniscule or no support directly for their customer's machine, providing only the electrical, Internet access and storage facilities for the server equipment. In most cases for colocation, the hosting customer would have their own administrator who will visit the data center on site in order to do any hardware upgrades or changes.

Clustered: having several servers hosting the same content for more effective resource utilization.
